Extrinsic Muscles The muscles located outside the larynx which are responsible for its rising during the swallowing process and lowering during the yawning process. These muscles should not be activated while singing because swallowing is the closure of the passage from the mouth to the lungs. Most vocal problems are the result of a high larynx position.
